Hubris, is something that destroyed the Persian Empire. Something to keep in mind though: make a note of those 'hubristic' ideas and see whether or not there was any validity to them when you gain experience. Just because you learn "this is the way we always did things" doesn't mean it's the Right Way, but it's definitely important to get that key experience first, to make sure what you're saying can carry some weight.<BR/><BR/>#2 is a good lesson. #3, on the other hand, depends on your office and the mix of personalities. You definitely don't have an upfront-brutalistic atmosphere at most offices, but passive-aggressiveness is not the solution/outlet. Listening is important, but I've found that proving your intelligence is just as important. Listening is a good way to do that because you learn, but you need to make sure you jump at a chance to prove you're intelligent. At least make sure you're not seen as an idiot. <BR/><BR/>I've done a few co-ops in various sized firms and it was really surprising how quickly people judged you based on intelligence. It seems like if you're seen as an idiot, then it's an uphill battle to change that perception. It was ridiculous how many times I heard the partners and staff use idiot to describe clients and other staff. That way when you go to someone for help you can say, "I'm not sure whether I should be doing option A or option B. What makes sense to you?" That way it looks like you've actually done some work. Asking questions like "What is this?" or "I don't get this." Aren't very useful because they don't allow someone to help you effectively.<BR/><BR/>I'd recommend going to an employee first, preferably someone at the same level as you. If they don't understand then try someone a little hire up. I've found face-to-face is best. E-mail can seem a little formal for file prep questions.<BR/><BR/>I've also found it helpful to find out who did the file the year before. Then you can just go and ask them. They probably won't remember, but they'll feel obligated to help a bit because they'll feel like they should remember it.<BR/><BR/>Anyways, don't just "sit and spin."
